I think most people dislike
cooking. It’s one of the things people collectively complain about. Some people
say they are too busy. I know some people are just bad at prioritizing, but I
do sympathize with those who truly don’t have time. I have tons of time. I use
to get off school at 2:45 and have to make dinner by 5:30. Easy. And now for
the next 2 months I have all day off. I plan on making some complex dishes, but
more on that later. But I also enjoy cooking. I think one of the worst parts
about going to college/living in a dorm is that I won’t be able to cook for myself.
I’ll have to eat precooked food for most of the year.
I also don’t really understand
when people argue that cooking is hard. I think cooking has 3 levels.
1. Able to read written instructions and follow
them.
2.
Able to cook from memorized recipes.
3.
Able to cook great things from random things
(like on Chopped).
I would consider myself around a 2. Most of the things I
cook are from recipes, but I have memorized basic things like macaroni and
cheese. But that first level is so basic. All cook books are instruction
manuals. If you don’t know how to do something, look it up. That’s advice for
life.
Another
group I don’t understand are “foodies” who don’t cook. They only go to restaurants.
I don’t understand how you could take such a passive approach to something you
say you love. I love food. I want to know all about it. How they’re processed and
cooked. How different methods yield different results. It’s like loving art but
only going to museums. They consume but never produce.
